CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Cavaliers are making minor changes to their coaching staff this coming season, with former Director of Player Development Mike Gerrity named head coach for Cleveland Charge — the G League affiliate.
“We are very excited that Mike Gerrity will lead the way as head coach for Cleveland Charge,” said JB Bickerstaff, head coach of the Cavaliers. “There is no better person for this position and we have great confidence in his ability to develop players. We have seen the fruits of his work with the Cavaliers and expect the same commitment and dedication with the caretaker.”
Gerrity joins the charge after nine years with the Cavs.
After shining at the University of Southern California and playing two seasons in the NBA with the Dakota Wizards, Erie Bay Hawks and Maine Red Closets, Geriti began his coaching career in 2013 as the Cavaliers’ assistant video coordinator.
He was then appointed Director of Player Development at Charge, spending two seasons in Canton before being promoted to Director of Player Development at the Cavaliers in 2018. Last September, Gerrity took another step forward in his coaching career, becoming a full-time assistant coach.
A few months ago, Gerrity got a chance to coach the Cavs’ summer league roster – a valuable starting point for this new G League gig.
“We are delighted that Mike has become the newest Head Coach for the Charge,” said General Manager Responsible Brendon Yu. “Mike has a wealth of experience at the NBA level serving in a variety of roles on the staff, but he really excels in player development. Mike also brings a unique perspective as a former D-League player himself. I really look forward to working with him and having him apply his knowledge and experience to lead the charge.”
With Geretti leading the job now, last year’s head coach, Dan Gerriot, will return to the Caves as an assistant, sources told cleveland.com.
Gerriot is the latest Charge head coach to receive a phone call from the NBA after a successful stint with the club. Gerriot joins Alex Jensen, Steve Hetzel, Jordi Fernandez and Nate Ringing. While Jensen, Hetzel, and Fernandez went to the other NBA teams, Reinking and Geriot stayed with the Cavs.
Earlier this season, Bickerstaff announced the addition of Luke Walton as assistant coach. With him and Gerriot now in the mix, sources say Bickerstaff is still trying to define some internal responsibilities, including the coaches who will be at the front of the bench this next season.
