Week 1 of the NFL regular season in hand – The season begins Thursday with the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills. Since many beginners see little or no action in pre-season, fantasy football Managers will not have much evidence to support their start/sit decisions in the first week.
But that’s where we can help.
Here are some of the key players who can thrive or fall in the first week of an NFL season:
QB Keeler Murray, Arizona Cardinals

Murray opens the season at home against a tough Kansas City side who will be able to score a significant number of points. The Chiefs gave up the second-highest number of fantasy quarterbacks in 2021, so expect Murray to match Patrick Mahomes for his shot in an exciting opening game.
RBD Andre Swift, Detroit Lions
The Philadelphia Eagles weren’t skilled at stopping the race in 2021, yielding the eighth-most fantasy points for appearances. Swift’s explosive talent will shine from the starting gate in the first week.
RB Alvin Kamara, New Orleans Saints
Kamara may be discontinued sometime this season but not before the first week. And an in-section showdown against the Atlanta Poison Falcons’ defense would be exactly what the doctor ordered.
Terry McLaurin, Washington Leaders
McLaurin, who was not criminally inducted in 2022, has fallen behind due to a marked reduction in quarterback at Carson Wentz. At home against a struggling Jacksonville High School, McLaurin will remind us of how talented he is no matter who is below center.
WR Trek Hill, Miami Dolphins
Miami paid a huge sum for Hill, and his phenomenal speed would be a challenge for the New England defense. Once Hill enters the open space, he is a threat to escape from the house. While New England has worked hard to add speed defensively in the off-season, Hill will pose a difficult matching problem.
And then, Fizzlers…
QB Daniel Jones, New York Giants
The Tennessee Titans conceded the fourth-fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks last season, and with Jones already in the hot seat in Week 1, the G-Men will likely struggle to move the ball into their opening game.
RB Damon Pierce, Houston Texas
Pierce was a late fantasy star as the rookie shot the billboards after being called a Texan who started running backwards. It’s a tough opening job against the Indianapolis team that will dominate possession time, forcing Houston to throw the ball to keep up.
RB Devin Singletary, Buffalo Bills
Singletary will have his days but against the reigning Super Bowl LA Rams, there won’t be a lot of lanes to beat. Buffalo will need to put the ball in the hands of QB Josh Allen to achieve the magic.
WR Sammy Watkins, Green Bay Packers
Aaron Rodgers is probably the quarterback that Watkins has been waiting for his entire career. However, he does not play into the game plan as does the ongoing Green Bay game against Minnesota.
WR Defonta Smith, Philadelphia Eagles
It will be hard to anticipate Smith from week to week because the Eagles prefer an attack focused on running. Having AJ Brown on the other side wouldn’t be a plus for Smith as QB Jalen Hurts looks at Brown’s way on most passes.
