Knicks ‘optimistic’ about Donovan Mitchell trade after RJ Barrett contract

Obi Tobin was scheduled to walk off Court One Tuesday at Citi Field as part of “Knicks Night” when he faces the Dodgers Mets.

With Donovan Mitchell, trade talks are not dead Despite the impending RJ Barrett contract extensionToppin may soon be in line to knock out the first pitch of the Salt Lake Bees – the Dodgers’ Triple-A Company.

According to a source, the Knicks are “hoping” they can seal the Mitchell deal without Barrett. The source says Knicks would not have come to this Barrett decision if they felt it would kill the trade.

Jazz head Danny Inge loves Barrett, but he Prioritizes getting four unprotected picks from the first round For Mitchell, a three-time star.

That may not be possible unless a third team such as the Lakers is added to revive the talks. According to a source, the Lakers are open to discussions and remain interested in striker Cam Reddish.

Ainge is said to be keeping an eye on the Lakers’ 2027 and 2029 picks. Knicks president Leon Rose has so far made no more than two unprotected picks in the first round, along with three conditional picks, which aren’t attractive to Ainge, as first reported by The Post.

The Nicks remain “optimistic” that they can make a jazz deal for Donovan Mitchell (45).

If Rose pulled out of the Barrett Mitchell game exactly, he would have completed his off-season plan that was determined to right all the wrongs from the summer of 2021.

On the night of the draw, Rose sacrificed his 11th-placed lottery selection to make way for point guard Jalen Bronson while adding an additional venture capital for a Mitchell-like deal.

In addition, Rose locked Barrett well below his maximum contract extension in agreeing to a four-year, $120 million package that includes incentives that include team wins, All-NBA, All-Star and All-Defensive team selections.

The rookie cap for the 2019 class — after the most recent cap increase — was five years, $193 million, according to former Nets scientist and NBA financial expert at ESPN, Bobby Marks. Originally it was $185 million.

Marks told The Post that Barrett got the deal intact because it can be compared to the extension package signed by Jaylene Brown of Boston, who has had more success as a winning player. Brown signed a four-year, $106 million extension two years ago.

Nick Brass hasn’t seen Barrett prove enough to be a maxed man yet.

“Utah never wanted to be the pushing team [Barrett] – Let New York overpay for a decent player but not one of the best.” But Mitchell could end up in New York once they come to an agreement on the number [first-round] Draft footage is included.”

Tobin holdings and shooting guard Quentin Grimes and Evan Fournier are the three most likely in the deal along with the picks.

Ainge is said to be trying to ramp up conversations with other teams after Barrett’s Monday night announcement by agent Bill Duffy.

But many in the league believe Ainge won’t find a package for Mitchell, who removed jazz from his Twitter bio on Tuesday, just like Knicks. That’s what Rose is betting on as he stares at a prestigious jazz manager at a high stakes poker game.

Some in the league feel that if Rose manages to make it, it would be wise to transfer Julius Randle as well. However, if Toppin is in the deal, that makes less sense.

A quartet of Jalen Brunson, Mitchell, Barrett and Randle are great on paper but below average in defensive terms and can be affected by chemistry issues because they all love owning a basketball.

“The hard part is moving on from Randle,” the coaching source said. “They might have to if you have Mitchell and Bronson and RJ.

“Randell cannot be equal to Mitchell or RJ in terms of touches, shots. His game is a ball-controlled scorer and he can pass willingly and play for his teammates but only when he feels like it. He has become a difficult teammate to play with.”

However, it would be great to watch it unfold, but the quartet is also creating a questionable long-term financial situation.

The quartet will take in more than $110 million from the maximum of $123 million in the 2023-24 season once Barrett’s contact extension is activated.

Randle is owed $25 million, Bronson $26.3 million, Mitchell $32.6 million and Barrett $27 million guaranteed for the first year.

That’s not a lot of commercial flexibility, especially without first-round picks for touring. This is the reason why there is no agreement between Rose and Inge.
