NBA Champion Nick Young takes boxing very seriously, and doesn’t want to end up like Nate Robinson

Nick Young understands exactly what it means to be “late.”

The common term, which originated from basketball, is basically recognized when one player dunks the ball over another player in a spectacular way.

Now, “lag” has been adapted across many sports. As a former first-round draft pick and NBA champion, Young has been on both sides of that coin, because those photos and videos always seem to live on forever.

These days, the 37-year-old Los Angeles native has put on a basketball and instead opted for a pair of boxing gloves as he prepares to become the latest crossover athlete to test himself in combat sports. Young certainly isn’t the first star to make the move, but he’s learned through traumatic experience that just like playing in the NBA, it’s better to take the job seriously — or someone will make you pay for it.

Young told The Fighter vs. “But for the most part, I was having fun.

“It’s nice to try something new, to learn something new. After basketball, finding something that gives you the same kind of excitement, so it feels good.”

On Saturday at the rescheduled Social Gloves card that will take place in his hometown, Young will face rapper Blueface at the co-main event of the latest show headed by a group of social influencers who have followed in the footsteps of people like Jake and Logan Paul.

Young also joins old NBA teammates such as Deron Williams and Nate Robinson, who have also tried boxing with varying levels of success. While Williams looked good in his solo fight last December against Frank Gore, Robinson suffered a much worse fate when His face was transplanted with a brutal knockout Delivered by Jake Paul on his first foray into the sport.

Seeing the success and failures of people coming from the same background is a cautionary tale for Young, who has spent the past few months training incredibly hard to make sure he looks as good in victory as Williams rather than fantasizing like Robinson.

“I give Nate credit for getting into the ring but I know it’s tough,” Young said. “It’s hard to lose like that. Because that’s all you’re known for. Nate was a slam champion, he’s been playing in the NBA for a long time and now everyone knows him because he’s the guy that Jake fired. [Paul].

“This will always be in the back of anyone’s head. It’s in the back of my head. At the same time, you come out victorious, things change for you. It’s ups and downs. You can become a meme in a good way or a meme in a bad way.”

The young man promises to be dedicated to boxing since he first steps into the ring. It all started as a challenge from his manager when he was looking for something to keep fit after the basketball season ended.

At 6 feet 7 and over 200 pounds, Young has a size and athletic performance that surpasses anyone else trying to learn the sport. But he also admits that natural gifts will only get to him after the punches begin to fly.

However, Young has enjoyed himself so much that he is looking at his upcoming fight against Blueface as the beginning of a new career rather than living some fantasy about competing in one-night boxing.

“It certainly wasn’t done,” Young said. “I want to see how far I can go with him. It’s fun. Once I pop my cherry and get past the first, I want to call in more people and have fun with it. Be the undisputed boxing basketball champion.”

Before his fight on Saturday, Young had already seen Williams ask for the winner, an interesting match as he seeks to establish himself in a new sport.

Young also loves the idea of taking on a social influencer like YouTube star turned KSI boxer, who recently fought twice in one night while picking up a pair of knockouts. In fact, he took a shot at KSI right after his event ended, and once he’s got some experience under his belt, that’s definitely a fight he’d like to fight.

“He was fighting people in the street,” Young joked when talking about KSI’s victories. “Fighting two battles in one night, it shows you that he wasn’t really fighting one.

“KSI, I felt like he didn’t fight anyone. It would be a good fight to see him fight Austin McBroom or Jake [Paul] Because he won a battle. Because that was nothing. I am everything [a fight against KSI]. The better I look, the more money I make.”
