Perrion Winfrey benched the Jets match; Jack Conklin is also among the idle brown

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Regardless of Bryon Winfrey’s junior defensive tackle for the Browns, Kevin Stefansky was enough to stop him in Sunday’s home game against the Jets.

This would have hurt the player that Browns fans embraced and couldn’t wait to play at the front of the Dawg Pound.

Winfrey, Brown’s fourth-round pick from Oklahoma, was suspended from Friday’s practice on disciplinary grounds, but Stefansky declined to give details or say whether he would miss the game.

However, Winfrey’s mentor, Myles Garrett, wasn’t shy about explaining what a novice should do.

“We all have to step up and say something, but sometimes silence is louder than words,” Garrett said Friday. “And we used our voice a few times and at the end of the day he has to learn to be a professional and Kevin took it into his own hands and he felt it was the right thing to do and I am behind the actions of my entire coach.”

Garrett noted that Winfrey’s mistakes were “very common knowledge. And it was easy to see. It wasn’t like we had to bring him to his attention. His actions were so obvious.”

This was the second time Stefanski sat in a player for disciplinary reasons. Last season, Rookie Safety called Richard Leconte at the Steelers’ Halloween game after some indiscretions.

The red flag was raised last week when Winfrey played only five shots in the 26-24 win over the Panthers, but he made one of them count. In the play after fellow rookie Alex Wright took a pass from Baker Mayfield, Winfrey hit one on the next play to bring in the third pass and 10. Grant Delpit took it from there, picking Mayfield in the next play. Karim Hunt took advantage of his one-yard catch from Jacoby Brissett.

It’s a short week, but Winfrey could make his first home game Thursday night against the Steelers.

RT Jack Conklin is inactive for the second week in a row

Conklin has been inactive for the second week in a row as he continues to return from surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon in December.

The thinking is that it would have been difficult for Conklin to come back after four days and play against the Steelers on Thursday night at First Energy Arena.

But if he feels okay by then—and that may be due to another in-game decision—Conklin will appear in his first season on national television.

Conklin was a decision every time and spent time before the game testing his injured knee before making the decision. He injured his knee in the loss last Sunday against Baltimore.

D’Ernest Johnson is inactive for the second week in a row

Johnson was among the inactive for the second week in a row.

The others are quarterback Keelen Mund, receiver Michael Woods second, Richard Leconte for safety and offensive tackle Chris Hubbard.
