It’s game week! The Pittsburgh Steelers preparing to take over Cincinnati Bengals In the first week of the 2022 regular season. With the team getting ‘extra training’ on Monday after not playing for more than a week, several players have been reported with new shirt numbers for the 2022 season.
It was clear that there would be at least some changes to the jersey numbers to come as the Steelers had a pair of players who made the 53-player roster and had duplicate numbers. These players were attacking Dan Moore Jr. and defensive line Larry Ogongobe, who wore the number 65 throughout the run-up. With Dan Moore wearing the number 65 in his rookie season with the Steelers in 2021, it has been reported that Ogunjobi will wear the number 99, which was previously used by Henry Mundo.
There was also another Steelers member who had changed his number since returning to the roster. Trent Scott wasn’t on the Steelers’ first list of 53 players, but he made a comeback when two players went to the reserve/injured (IR) roster on Thursday. Despite wearing the number 64 all throughout pre-season for the Steelers, Scott is said to be changing to the number 72 which was already in use when he arrived at the Steelers in mid-May by UDFA Jordan Tucker. Most recently, the number 72 was also worn in pre-season for the Steelers by Adrian Ealy.
The Steelers also added three new players to the roster last week who were not with the squad during the pre- 2022 season. According to Steelers Media, outside back Malik Reed, who the Steelers acquired via trade last Tuesday, will wear the number 50 she used Delontay Scott this season. Offensive tackle Jesse Davis, also acquired via trade on Tuesday, wears the number 77 used by John Leglow who landed in the Steelers’ training squad the next day. The Steelers’ latest new player was Jamir Jones, who announced his assignment on Thursday. Jones will return to the number 40 he wore for three games in Pittsburgh in 2021.
ModernizationThe Steelers have updated their website by adding three players to the coaching squad. In the update, Jammer Jones’ number was changed from 40 to 48.
There are more repeat numbers from the Steelers preseason when you consider the coaching staff and injured reserve players. Damonate Kazee was placed on IR this week and had a repeat number with the return of Benny Snell Jr. In an unconfirmed report, Kazee is set to wear number 23 when he hopes to return to play later this season. For the coaching staff, these are the numbers reported at this time for new players as well as those who made a change:
31: Mark Gilbert
33: Jason Huntley
45: Hamilcar Rashed Jr. (was #46)
49: Chappelle Russell
74: John Leglow (was #77)
87: Justin Rigg
96: Rinelle Rain
Modernization: With the menu update on Steelers.com, all these numbers have been confirmed except for Damontae Kazee and Larry Ogunjobi. Those who cover the Steelers have confirmed that Ogunjobi is wearing the number 99.
