Sources say the Cleveland Cavaliers are working on Armoni Brooks, Kelan Martin, and other free agents this week.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland Cavaliers are bringing in several free-training agents this week, including Armoni Brooks, Kelan Martin and Mamadi Diakite, sources told

The Cavaliers — and other NBA teams — can bring up to 20 players to training camp, which begins at the end of this month. This week’s exercises allow team executives to take a closer look at potential camp invites.

The sources say that the first exercise took place on Tuesday, and the second is scheduled for Wednesday.

Of the nine players involved, Brooks, Martin and Dickett have the most NBA experience. Sources say 25-year-old veteran Ray Spalding was also among the free agents expected to be involved.

Brooks, 24, is a 6-foot-3 combo guard who has played 74 games — a career in the NBA that includes stops in Houston and Toronto. His best season with the Rockets came in 2020-21, averaging 11.2 points at 40.6% shooting and 38.2% from a 3-point range to go with 3.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 20 games.

After coming out without drafting in 2018 and starting his professional career in Germany, Martin joined the Minnesota Timberwolves on a dual contract, splitting his time between the G League’s Iowa Wolves and the NBA. His longest stint in the NBA came in Indiana, where the massive 6-foot-6 winger played two seasons, averaging 5.3 points and 2.1 rebounds in 62 games.

The Diackett played four collegiate seasons in Virginia, helping the program win a national title, before coming out without drafting in 2020. By signing with the Milwaukee Bucks as a two-way player, the Diakite was named the First Team All-NBA G League. He has also worked on the G League All-Defensive Team and the G League All-Rookie Team. That play led to a standard contract with the Bucks, allowing him to be part of the NBA team, before he was cut short before training camp in 2021. Most recently, Diakite played for the Oklahoma City Thunder, landing three separate 10-day contracts while appearing in the 13 games.

Following Cleveland’s recent deal with three-time All-Star Donovan Mitchell, the team has 14 players on contract for the 2022-23 season, with one place on the NBA roster currently available. Technically, the Foundation could create more flexibility with both Dean Wade and Lamar Stevens on unsecured deals, but that seems highly unlikely given their anticipated roles next season, and how both have evolved since joining the team as unreliable, skinny free agents. Incredibly free proxy market. Wade and Stevens will compete for Cleveland’s small starting point – the result of Laurie Markkanen being included in Mitchell’s blockbuster movie.

The Cavs are worth about $2.5 million in luxury tax, which gives them enough room to sign a free agent for 15th. The other option is to keep the last place open through training camp, which the front office has done in the past. There is also a couple – junior Isaiah Mobley and RJ Nembhard – on dual contracts, expected to split their time between the Charge and the Cavs.

The current roster composition leaves room for four potential training camp sites. It’s not a guarantee that any of the Cleveland players this week for training will get those points.

This isn’t the first time the Cavs have done this type of workout session. Last September, Denzel Valentine impressed the team’s executives during practice, locking in last place on the team’s roster ahead of Garrison Matthews.

In the past years, the Cavs have also invited Charge members to a training camp. Sources say the team is still working on finalizing its training camp roster.
